Edwin van der Sar brushes off Manchester United director of football talk and remains committed to Ajax

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Edwin van der Sar for their new director of football role.

The former Red Devils goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a return to Old Trafford in a technical capacity.

However, in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, the current Ajax chief executive reiterated his desire to continue his work with the Dutch champions.

When asked if he was interested in Man United’s director of football role, Van der Sar told talkSPORT: “No, I’m focusing on Ajax.

“I’m the chief executive of Ajax; we just had a fantastic year in Europe and also won the league in Holland.

“We’re going to put Ajax at a higher level on a European level and make sure that they’re back to the elite. That’s working well.”

However, when pressed on the issue, the Dutchman refused to rule out the possibility of a Man United return, instead opting to not answer.

The 48-year-old has played a key role in Ajax’s resurgence in recent years, which included reaching the Champions League semi-finals last season.

While draped in history, the Dutch club are not a financial powerhouse, and Van der Sar’s ability to maximise their potential on a limited budget has caught the eye across Europe.
