Jurgen Klopp press conference: Liverpool boss on Marco Silva, Everton’s form and Virgil van Dijk missing out o

Jurgen Klopp says he does not feel sorry for Marco Silva, but insists he is ‘on the side’ of the under-fire Everton boss.

The Toffees manager is under huge pressure with his team 17th in the table after winning just four of their opening 14 Premier League games.

Next up for the Toffees is a daunting trip to league leaders and local rivals Liverpool, who Everton have failed to beat in their past 19 meetings.

A heavy defeat at Anfield could spell the end for Silva, who was expected to have Everton competing for a top six spot this season but instead has them fighting off relegation.

Klopp said: “The last thing Marco needs now is me to feel sorry for him and I don’t, but I am really on his side because I know about the job.

“The last game against Leicester [in which they lost 2-1] they were really good, caused them a lot of problems and had chances.”

Below, you can read the best bits from Klopp’s pre-match press conference…

On Everton’s league position

“The table tells the full truth at the end of the season. If you go through the Everton squad nobody denies it’s a really good squad.

“They have difficult injuries, especially the [Andre] Gomes one. [Fabian] Delph too is a very important player for them.

“There is a lot of pressure, of course, Everton is an ambitious club, rightly so. They are not the only ones in this situation, this league is really different for everyone.”

“I didn’t run around my living room celebrating.

“I think for both it is not exactly what you look for, playing Everton is a big game, no problem, but it’s a tough game for the third round.”

On Liverpool’s strong record against Everton

“We are in a better moment, that’s obvious. But if it is a derby we would love to win.

“Everton want to strike back and they can do it differently. They can sort their problems with a win. There is no doubt about this team.”

On Joel Matip’s injury

“Joel needs a bit more time. Healing but not exactly how we wish. The rest are fit and available.”

On Lionel Messi winning the Ballon d’Or ahead of Virgil van Dijk

“I see it slightly different and a lot of people see it slightly different but that’s absolutely no problem.

“Lionel Messi, I’ve said probably 500,000 times in my life already, is probably the best player I saw in my lifetime.

“But I cannot remember a more impressive season from a defender ever. Honestly. So it would have been right if Virg won it, I heard it was pretty close.”

On managers not being given enough time

“Managers given enough time? For me, yes. Generally, I don’t know, I can only speak about me, I have never felt in doubt. In my job or others, there is pressure to deliver.

“If it doesn’t work out, the clubs have to try something else.

“In general, the pressure and the decisions are made too quickly, of course. It happens because people think they cannot reach targets anymore, I have no real idea about it.”
