Kieran Trippier: Atletico Madrid sign England defender from Tottenham for £20million

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier.

The Spanish giants have paid a fee of around £20million to secure the signature of the England international.

Trippier has signed a three-year contract with Diego Simeone’s side.

The 28-year-old has been with Spurs for the past four years, having joined from Burnley in the summer of 2015, and made 114 appearances for the Premier League club in all competitions.

His final match for the north Londoners was the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in May.

A key man in England’s run to the last four of the 2018 World Cup, scoring the opening goal in the semi-final defeat to Croatia, Trippier’s form dipped during the course of the 2018/19 campaign.

But the former Manchester City trainee still made 38 appearances across all competitions last season as Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League, as well as reaching the Champions League final.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino was happy to let Trippier go, however, as he plots an overhaul of his squad this summer.

Fellow England full-back Danny Rose is also set to move on, having been left out of the Spurs squad for the pre-season tour of Asia.

Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou have been left behind in England too in order to negotiate moves away.

Speaking to talkSPORT before the Trippier sale was announced, former Tottenham star Paul Gascoigne questioned why the club had allowed the player to go for £20m.

“He’s a good player and it’s a good move for him, a big move,” said Gazza.

“But I just can’t believe he’s going for £20million!

“Some of the players are going for so much nowadays, it’s ridiculous. Some of them can’t even trap a bag of cement, honestly!”
