Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 pens): Jurgen Klopp’s men win exhausting Super Cup clash against Blues as Tammy A

Tammy Abraham had his spot-kick saved by Adrian after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes of football.

Earlier, Olivier Giroud gave Chelsea the lead, only for Sadio Mane to equalise early in the second-half.

Mane then turned the game around early into extra-time but the Blues replied through Jorginho’s penalty before the Reds went onto win European football’s 2019/20 season curtain-raiser.

The Europa League winners started better and took a deserved lead when Giroud timed his run to perfection before slotting the ball home.

Christian Pulisic thought he had doubled Chelsea’s lead just before the break, however, his strike was correctly ruled out for offside.

Liverpool were a different team in the second-half and were on level terms when Sadio Mane bundled the ball home after good link-up play between Roberto Firmino and Fabinho.

Blues youngster Mason Mount thought he’d won the game late on with a well placed effort but he was just offside as the game went to extra-time.

Sadio Mane gave the Reds the lead five minutes into the first period of extra-time, crashing home Firmino’s lay-off.

However, Frank Lampard’s men hit back through Jorginho’s penalty after Adrian was adjudged to have felled Abraham and the game ended up going to penalties.

But Abraham’s penalty joy turned to misery when his tame effort from twelve yards was saved by Adrian’s feet gave Liverpool the win.
